"Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes [plural] lie, And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes [plural], but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed." (Jn.20:6-8)
>Curious Questioner> "And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth." St Matthew 27:59
>CQ> I'd say we have a little stand-off here. Cloth is a singular...were Matthew describing seperate garments, he would have used "clothes", "Clothing", etc.
Linen cloth is a description of the material used to wrap Jesus. He was naked when he was crucified, and Joseph clothed him with linen.
[2008 update: Looking closer at the wording in Matthew, it appears that it is talking about when they first took his naked body and wrapped it in a (singular) cloth, for decency's sake, before transporting him to the sepulchre. The other accounts that mention "clothes" (plural) describe how he was finally prepared for burial, with the spices, etc. --Richard]
John gives much more detail than Matthew:
"And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes [plural] with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury." (John 19:39,40)
And further note the "manner" of the Jews' burial in the case of Lazarus when he hopped like a mummy out of the sepulchre: "And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: [plural] and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go." (John 11:44)
The eye-witness testimony of those present is conclusive that Jesus had a separate covering "about his head", as prophesied. Obviously the abominable "shroud of Turin" is a hoax. Remember that Jesus is the Lord and receive the love of the truth of the word of God.
Grace be to them that love the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. --Richard
>Curious Questioner> As prophesied?
The SIGN of the prophet Jonas: "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." (Mt.12:40)
As you recall, Jonah was cast into the sea by his ship mates, and his own testimony of what happened after he was "cast" out says:
"The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head." (Jon.2:5)
Obviously he drowned when the waters came in unto his soul. The grave clothes of the depth enclosed him round about. A separate head covering was wrapped about his head. When he was swallowed by the great fish, he was entombed in the whale's belly.
As you well remember, Joseph and Nicodemus wrapped Jesus' body round about in linen clothes [plural] with about an hundred pound weight of spices before burial. And behold: "Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes [plural], but wrapped together in a place by itself." (Jn.20:6,7)
Jonah was closed round about by the depth. Jesus was enclosed round about by the linen clothes (plural). Jonah had a separate covering of weeds WRAPPED about his head. Jesus had a separate napkin WRAPPED about his head. (So much for the one-piece shroud of Turin hoax.) Jonah was wrapped up before he was entombed in the belly of the whale. Jesus was wrapped up before he was entombed. Jonah was three days and three nights in the tomb of the whale's belly. Jesus in the sepulchre was three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (So much for the catholic "good friday" sunset to sunday sunrise "three" day fable, since that would be less than one and a half jewish days: Friday Night, Saturday Daytime, and Saturday Night is 1 day between 2 nights, not "three days and three nights" as the Lord Jesus said.)
The Lord Jesus was crucified for our sins on the 4th day of the week and was prepared for burial at sunset and entombed at the beginning of the fifth day of the week. (You surely remember that it was on the fifth day that "God created great whales"! Gen.1:21p :)
Jesus was in the heart of the earth the 5th, 6th and 7th days of the week and arose from the dead sunset [in] the end of the sabbath. He rose from the dead for our justification through faith in his blood.
The word of faith says, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Are you saved? :) Remember that Jesus is the Lord and receive the love of the truth. Grace be to your heart, in love for Jesus' sake. Amen. --Richard
>CQ> I have heard well-meaning preachers declare that Jesus received only 39 lashes, as prescribed by Roman law. Evidence from various sources suggests otherwise.
"Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one." (2Cor.11:24) one less than 40 is, of course, 39 lashes, as Jesus, of the tribe of Judah received; but Paul was of the tribe of Benjamin, which is why Paul was given "five times" as much:
"And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of their's." (Gen.43:34p) "To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment." (Gen.45:22) (300 is five times sixty. :)
>CQ> The Shroud of Turin, if it is the burial cloth of Christ...
Obviously the SINGLE piece shroud of Turin is a HOAX, since Jesus was not buried in a single "cloth", but as the scriptures of truth say, when John outran Peter to the Sepulchre:
"And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes [plural] lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes [plural] lie, And the NAPKIN, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself." (John 20:5-7)
The manner of Jesus' burial: "And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes [plural] with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury." (John 19:39,40)
When Jesus raised Lazarus, the people saw the mummy HOPPING out for JOY: "And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: [plural] and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go." (Jn.11:44)
You would be wise to reject catholic fables and traditions of men that make the word of God of none effect. You really ought to turn your whole heart unto the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us from this present evil world. He was raised for our justification through faith in his blood. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Grace be to them that cherish the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. --Richard
