"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." (2Pet.3:9)
>>Previous Person> ...well if a day is as 1000 yrs in the bible, what is the interpretation of a year?
(A "day" on the North Pole is a "year". :)
>Curious Questioner> If you want to study geology or astronomy, you really should use a geology or astronomy textbook.
Astronomy and geology have to do with heaven and earth. The Bible (AUTHORized Version) is the only science book (that I'm aware of) that BEGINS with these ESSENTIAL elements of ASTRO-GEOLOGY:
(1) Time - "In the beginning...
(2) Energy - ...God... [as source of energy]
(3) Motion - ...created...
(4) Space - ...the heaven...
(5) Matter - ...and the earth."
>CQ> The bible does *not* teach us how the heavens go; it teaches us how to go to heaven...
How do YOU go to heaven? ("NASA" is a hebrew word for: LIFT OFF! :)
>CQ> if God had intended us to learn astronomy from the Bible, would he have, at a minimum, listed all the (then-known) planets? There is mention of only two (Jupiter and Mars, I think).
EARTH & Mercury too, and Venus as the "morning star" or "day star". Have you ever seen Venus during daylight hours? The trick is knowing how many degrees it is behind the sun, and remembering there are 4 minutes per degree; then stand where the top of a telephone pole blocks the sun, wait however long; and the DAY STAR will be sitting above the pole. A paper-towel tube (a 1x scope! :) is helpful.
>CQ> The "thousand years" is a figure of speech.
Is the expression, "one day with Eskimoes is as a year, and one year is as a day", just figurative above the Arctic Circle?
>CQ> Just like Jesus' admonition to forgive 70 times 7 times.
That's 490 "times", the exact number of times on the once-a-year "Day of Atonement" that God forgave the NATION of Israel during the prophetic "seventy weeks" of Daniel. (A "time" is a year; a week is 7 years; and 70 weeks is 490 years.) When the officials of the nation had Stephen stoned to death, he prayed: "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge." No national forgiveness after that, but individuals, "whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord", may be forgiven.
"NASA" is also the hebrew word for forgive: to lift off a debt! You need LIFT OFF, before you can go to heaven! (God lifted our sins off us and put them on Jesus on the cross nearly 2000 years ago! :)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with us all. Amen. --Richard
