>Curious Questioner> Jesus was not born the "Messiah". "Messiah" is Hebrew for annointed.
And "Christos" is Greek for anointed. (Messias is kin to Moses! :)
What you need to remember is that Jesus is the Lord and that it is better to trust in the word of God than to put confidence in man.
Saul was the Lord's anointed in 1st Samuel. David as a type of Christ Jesus was anointed by Samuel the prophet in 1Sam.16:13, and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward, but behold, how that David submitted himself to Saul, calling him the Lord's Anointed. Even though David was also anointed as the Lord's Christ, he spent many years in hidden places, until the death of Saul, the Lord's Christ, after which David arose as the Lord's Christ.
David was already the Anointed in the hearts of those that followed with him and shared in his travail, but it is not until 2nd Samuel that we find him being acknowledged by Israel as the Lord's Christ:
"And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah." (2Sam.2:4p)
"So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years." (2Sam.5:3,4)
You still don't get it, do you? David was already anointed long before the age of thirty, and he was anointed even BEFORE he went out to do battle with Goliath.
After many years of rejection, he RETURNED, and was anointed AGAIN the second time (for the house of Judah), and AGAIN the third time for ALL ISRAEL. (See Rom.11) (Don't fail to consider Ezekiel 37:16-25 and David's resurrection!)
Your claim that Jesus was not Christ until his baptism is false. The Holy Ghost was upon Simeon in Jerusalem when Jesus was brought to the temple after his circumcision, and Simeon most certainly did behold "the Lord's Christ" (Lk.2:26p), as it is written. And bless God, he held the Lord's Christ, even the Lord's Anointed in his arms. What a wonderful thought! to hold the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us that he might deliver us from this present evil world.
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." Grace be to thee in the love of the truth for Jesus' sake. Amen. --Richard
From a message by a Curious Questioner--
>>QU> ... there were people in the OT who lost their leadership because of their actions; Saul comes to mind very quickly.
>CQ> Whoa! Are you sure of that? Saul lost his anointing and his approval from God, but I don't think he lost his leadership. David was *very careful* to respect Saul's kingship.
Although David was anointed by Samuel, to be king, Saul still ruled and reigned, and David still called Saul "the LORD's anointed", even after the death of Saul, as we find in 2Sam.1:14.
After that, the LORD had David move to Hebron: "And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. (2Sam.2:4p) And then there was a long war between Judah and the rest of Israel, in particular, "war between the house of Saul and the house of David." (2Sam.3:1p) Finally, the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and admitted they were bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh: "and they anointed David king over Israel." (2Sam.5:3p)
This is something to keep in mind, especially when you consider that the word Christ means Anointed, and the devil is presently the anointed Cherub reigning over men as the prince of the power of the air, and as the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience, to blind the hearts of men to the love of the truth.
Remember that Jesus is the Lord, the Christ who will return after "many false Christs" have deceived the hearts of men. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Believe none other. (It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. :)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be unto you. Amen. --Richard
