From a "Questioning User" (QU18) followup to "Global Flood"--
>>RC> "And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered." (Genesis 7:19,20)
>QU18> Actually, the way I read it to mean is that the high hills (not mountains) were covered then the water went up another 15 cubits to cover the mountains. It doesn't give any indication about how much above the mountains the water went.
The waters prevailed 15 cubits UP THE SIDE of the 30 cubit high ark! If the water was less than 15 cubits above the mountains, then the 30 cubit high ark sitting half in and half out of the water would have gotten stuck. The decreasing waters didn't expose "the tops of the mountains" until the 1st day of the 10th month! (Gen.8:5)
(The fact that the 15 cubits upward measure was given AFTER the high hills were covered, but before the mountains were covered, might indicate that the ark was built "in the hill country." :)
"And the flood was forty days upon the earth...waters increased... the waters prevailed...increased greatly...waters prevailed exceedingly... all high hills... covered... mountains were covered."
That is OBVIOUSLY not a description of any local gully washer. The rain drummed on the roof of the ark like hammers of hell, and the elements, lashing in fury, clapped their hands over a drowning world. Monster tidal waves swept around the world. (Earthquake generated waves have been clocked at 430 mph.) The earth convulsed, enormous crevices opened up, the earth rocked violently and lurched outward in its orbit. (see Isa.13:13; 24:18,20; Psm.82:5)
There was no mercy for that WICKED world of ungodly men, that had rejected the LORD and had said unto God, "Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways." Contrary to the best findings of "science" in that day, it was possible for water to rain down out of the sky, even though such a thing had never been known before.
Unbelief in the plain biblical account is not based on any so-called "scientific" research, or new evidence, or geological discoveries, or even a desire to find the facts; but is rather due to a deeply ingrained rebellion in the heart of sinners who instinctively know that they will one day have to answer for their sins before God.
The only sure Ark of safety in these last days is to take refuge in the LORD Jesus Christ: who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world. In these final remaining days of your life, you really ought to remember that Jesus is the LORD and receive the love of the truth that you might be saved. Grace be unto your heart in understanding for Jesus' sake. Amen. --Richard
